Job Description

The incumbent will be expected to contribute to the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate modules in English linguistics and/or literature. The critical research, supervision, publication and service functions of the position is to plan, establish and drive digital humanities initiatives in the Department of Humanities and Arts, based on the incumbent’s existing expertise but also in expertise gained by means of professional development and networking. Such initiatives would involve conducting interdisciplinary research and training to explore how computational approaches can be applied across the diverse range of disciplines that constitute the Department’s mandate, namely languages and literatures, history, archaeology, cultural heritage and conservation, visual arts, drama/theatre arts and music. Projects could involve (but would not be limited to) digital preservation, corpus planning and building, computational analysis of texts and/or artifacts, documenting indigenous knowledge, digital archives, 3D modelling, virtual exhibitions, and/or AI in teaching and research. The outcomes of these initiatives should ultimately transform teaching, learning, curriculum development and research in the Department, in order to respond to the demands and opportunities that the Fourth/Fifth Industrial Revolution poses to the humanities and humanity. 

Requirements

A doctorate in English linguistics/literature or a cognate discipline, or a doctorate in a digital humanities field. Three (3) years of service as an Associate Professor, a cumulative and sustained record of twenty-five (25) publications of which seven (7) must have been published since being Associate Professor. Proven expertise in the intersection of digital technologies and the humanities, with an emphasis on using digital tools and methodologies to describe, Analyse, preserve, and interpret the cultural, artistic, and historical records of humanity. Additional formal qualifications and proven experience in a wide range of digital humanities disciplines would serve as strong advantages. A teaching and publications record commensurate with the requirements for the rank.
